This section features a variety of accredited or well-accepted training courses in fields that are relevant to organisations with a focus on HIV and AIDS, such as counselling and home-based care training. Most NPOs offer some form of training to their own staff; some also offer training to people from outside their organisation and others specialise in training. The type and standard of training are dependent on the organisation’s resources and level of expertise and experience. If your staff need to undergo any form of training it is preferable to deal with organisations that offer accredited courses or courses run by accredited organisations. The government accrediting bodies include: SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) and SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority). The main function of SAQA is to oversee the appropriate development and implementation of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and to provide accreditation for the different SETAs, of which there are 25 representing all the main industries. The most important SETA with regard to HIV and AIDS is HWSETA (Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority). The role of the different SETAs is to provide an appropriate skills development strategy and monitor education and training within each sector.
Courses in capacity building are also included in this section as these can dramatically improve an organisation's impact and efficacy. These courses are primarily run by umbrella HIV and AIDS organisations such as the AIDS Consortium and NACOSA.
