Many people are confused about whether South African Identity Documents
are required in order to access ART, including the medical staff
responsible for administering the treatment. The following document
provides definitive evidence that this is not the case and that ART is available to everyone who qualifies.
Faith-based documents focusing on HIV and AIDS
Support for the following document was provided by the
Global Bureau of Health, U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID), under the terms of the CORE Initiative Award. The CORE
Initiative is a USAID-funded global program designed to support an
inspired, effective, and inclusive response to the causes and
consequences of HIV and AIDS by strengthening the capacity of
community- and faith-based groups worldwide.

General interest
The following document is the government's HIV and AIDS and STI strategic plan for South Africa
2007-2011. The plan defines the nature of the
South African HIV and AIDS problem and identifies key interventions to
be carried out in order to reduce the rate of new HIV infections. It
also recognises the plight of the many people that are living with HIV
and AIDS and outlines relevant interventions to mitigate the impact of
this disease on individuals, families and communities.
Government's National Strategic Plan (Draft 10 NSP 2007)
The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) produces a regular publication
entitled Equal Treatment. This covers topical issues within the field
of HIV and AIDS. The latest issue addresses the government's National
Strategic Plan, the importance of HIV education, how TAC's literacy

Help Wanted: confronting the health care worker crisis to expand access to HIV and AIDS treatment
Three South African mortality audit reports: Saving Mothers, Saving Babies and Saving Children, provide a review of the health care provided to mothers, babies and children. These reports help to guide priorities for the National Department of Health and all levels of health service delivery. In 'Every Death Counts', the authors of these three reports have come together in order to provide a unified call for action to save the lives of South Africa's mothers babies and children.

Orphans and Vulnerable Children
The Children at the Centre series has been compiled by Save the
Children, UK and is written for organisations that support community
groups working with vulnerable children. It is drawn from the
experiences of Save the Children across Africa where such community
groups or committees form the backbone of their work with vulnerable
children (whether as a result of HIV and AIDS, conflict or other
causes).
Children at the Centre - a guide to supporting community groups caring for vulnerable children
The following Save the Children report focuses on
the plight of children in southern Africa who cross borders
unaccompanied in search of work and education in neighbouring
countries. Many of these children are from the poorest and most
vulnerable households and have lost their parents as a result of HIV
and Aids. These children are often exploited and abused once they
arrive in the host country, and their undocumented status often means
that they are denied essential services and assistance. This report
aims to inform legislation, policy-making and programming in order to
ensure that these very vulnerable children are better protected.
Children on the move: protecting unaccompanied migrant children in
South Africa and the region
Also written by Save the Children, this next report contains a
detailed analysis on the challenges of channelling resources to
communities responding to orphans and vulnerable children in southern
Africa.
Bottle Necks and Drip Feeds
UNICEF's 2007 and 2008 reports focus on both women and children,
as any benefits gained by women in terms of equality in the household, education, employment and politics and government, as well as health, are
immediately passed on to their children.

The Children's Institute, University of Cape Town, produces the South African Child Gauge report each year with a new theme. The central theme of the first 2005 edition is 'Children in the context of HIV and AIDS'. 'Children and Poverty' is the theme of the second 2006 edition and the third edition (2007/8) focuses on children's rights to social services. This edition covers the policy and legislative developments that provide the foundation for realising this important but often neglected and misunderstood right.
